Hey!
I'm Clare, a Scottish printmaker. I Graduated from Gray's School Of Art in Aberdeen in July 2013
I was born in January 1991 and raised in 'Sunny' Aberdeenshire by an awesome family. My grandmother, Joan Burnett, was also an artist and she taught me how to draw at an early age. I spent a lot of time at my grandparent’s gorgeous house in Newmachar as a child, my grandfather is an amazing gardener and some of my favorite memories are of playing in the gardens with my siblings or drawing there with my grandmother.
I was always interested in art and at school was often told off for doodling all over my jotters one of my teachers requested that I at least stopped drawing eyes all over them as it was 'too spooky'.
After leaving academy in 2008 I attended Aberdeen College for a year where I met some amazingly wacky characters before beginning my time at Gray's where I was taught many printing techniques and skills, quickly falling in love with Lino Printing. My final years work was on a rather huge scale (150cm x 105 cm) and while I loved using the sheets of lino as a Cathartic sketchbook I quickly learned the impracticalities of working so large with this media and have began to scale down again.
My work is very personal often documenting issues that are bothering me at that time or memorializing the people I love. I mix positive experiences with negative ones in my work because all negative events are surrounded by positive ones in my inner world at least if not the real one.
I have began producing Floor pieces or 'Mop-able Art' in the form of giant lino floor mats that have been carved into with images and text like my other works but in a material that enables you to walk on and indeed mop them. Given the materiel they are extremely strong and very difficult to damage and yet extremely beautiful. They would look wonderful in any home and can be made to any scale. These pieces work wonderfully for children, as they are very textural and easy to interact with.
Most recently however I have been learning how to produce 'Mokuhanga" prints which is a traditional Japanese printing method, it is an entirely water based medium and produces wonderful results (see my portfolio page for some examples!) and I’m also giving painting a wee shot again which is rather terrifying!
If you have any questions please send me a message on my contact me page!
P.S I promise to make this page better when I get a chance!!
